Workshop on “Touching Historical Artifacts with Suitable Materials”

An international workshop titled “Touching the Historical Monuments with the Appropriate Materials” was held on January 30-31, 2020. The workshop was organized in collaboration with the Cappadocia Studies Application and Research Center and the International Relations Unit Erasmus Institutional Coordination Office of Cappadocia University. This workshop was a continuation of the previous workshop held at our university in April 2018, titled “The Restoration Story of Little Cappadocia,” but this time the focus was specifically on the Cappadocia region. The main theme and problem addressed during the workshop was “industrial mortars versus traditional mortar materials used in historical buildings,” and this issue was specifically examined within the context of the Cappadocia region.

The workshop explored in detail the importance of materials used in the restoration and conservation processes of historical buildings, scientific analyses of traditional techniques, and the selection of materials in accordance with international standards. Academics from Italy and Spain, along with Turkish experts, shared their knowledge and experience in this field.

The event provided an academic platform for determining the most suitable conservation methods for Cappadocia’s unique rock-carved structures and stone architecture. The workshop aims to improve the quality and sustainability of restoration work in the region.

In addition to theoretical presentations, the workshop program was enriched with practical training sessions, such as mortar making, for Architectural Restoration students at Cappadocia University.
