On January 6, 2020, Dr. Hale Kozlu, a faculty member at Erciyes University’s Faculty of Architecture, delivered a two-part seminar titled “The Use of Mortar in Traditional Construction Systems in Anatolian Architecture” for our Architectural Restoration Program students. The seminar, which began at 10:00 a.m. in Hall A-1, featured Dr. Kozlu presenting the definitions and examples of various binders and mortars used throughout human history, starting from ancient times. Following the seminar, at 1:00 p.m., the group traveled to the Cappadocia History and Culture Museum, currently under construction in the district of Avanos, to conduct a practical application exercise related to the topic. Students were shown the types of mortar on site, and their differences and similarities were discussed.
This event was planned as preparation for an international workshop held at the end of the same month. The aim was to equip students with a solid foundation of knowledge and experience for the two-day workshop.
