Scenes of the Passion Examined in Cappadocian Byzantine Churches

A special seminar titled “Christian Iconography in Cappadocian Byzantine Churches: Passion Scenes” was held at the Cappadocia Research Center (KAM) within Cappadocia University. The event explored the iconographic and artistic depth of Passion scenes, which adorn the walls of historic Byzantine churches in the Cappadocia region and depict the suffering of Jesus.

The seminar, given by Research Assistant Dr. Gizem Öncelen from the Department of Art History at Anadolu University in Eskişehir, took place in the Mustafapaşa Oktay Sinanoğlu Conference Hall. Dr. Öncelen drew attention to the stylistic features of the “Passion” scenes in the wall paintings of Byzantine Cappadocia, comparing and contrasting these scenes with examples of Byzantine art from different geographical areas throughout history.

The seminar attracted significant interest from academics and art history enthusiasts seeking to gain a deeper understanding of Cappadocia’s unique cultural and artistic heritage.
