Critical Meeting Following Earthquake from KAM: Disasters and Cultural Heritage Discussed

Kapadokya University’s Kapadokya Research Center (KAM) and the Department of Urban and Regional Planning jointly organized an important seminar and panel event titled “Disasters in Our Country, Our Cultural Heritage, and the February 6 Earthquake.” Following the major earthquake disaster in our country, the program, which aimed to assess the state of Anatolia’s rich cultural heritage in the face of disasters, attracted great interest. 

In his opening speech at the hybrid event, which was held in two parts, Rector Prof. Dr. Hasan Ali Karasar described the February 6 earthquake as “the disaster of the millennium,” noting that in addition to the loss of life, thousands of years of historical and cultural heritage had also suffered great damage, and drew attention to the importance of the issue. 

In the first part of the program, the “Disasters and Cultural Heritage” seminars, Prof. Dr. Ruşen Keleş gave the opening speech on “Disaster Management in Our Country.” 

Prof. Dr. Zeynep Gül Ünal, Vice President of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), presented on “Managing Disaster Risks to Cultural Assets,” explaining international approaches to protecting cultural heritage.
