Byzantine Cappadocia: An International Conference on Local and Interregional Perspectives

The international conference titled “Byzantine Cappadocia: Visualizing Community from Local and Transregional Perspectives,” which examines Cappadocia’s cultural heritage from the Middle Ages in the context of city, architecture, and art, was held at Cappadocia University (KÜN). The conference was organized under the leadership of UPeNN and with the support of the Cappadocia Research Center (KAM).

During the event, academics from different countries conducting research on Cappadocia came together to evaluate the region’s Byzantine cultural heritage from a multifaceted perspective. Through presentations and sessions, Cappadocia’s Byzantine past, long considered a “local” and “exceptional” heritage area, was re-examined within a holistic framework in the context of local and interregional relations.

Throughout the conference, the urban structure, architectural production, and visual culture of Byzantine Cappadocia were examined within the framework of historical continuities and networks of interaction. This approach allowed the region to be evaluated not only through local dynamics but also within broader geographical and cultural relationships.

Held in memory of Robert G. Ousterhout, the conference made significant contributions to increasing the academic visibility of Byzantine Cappadocia studies and strengthening scientific exchange among researchers from different disciplines.
